The idea of matching a gemstone to a time of birth is genuinely old — some scholars trace it to the twelve stones on the breastplate of the biblical high priest, later linked by writers like Josephus and St. Jerome to the twelve signs of the zodiac. But the specific month-by-month list most people know today — the one this calculator uses — is much younger: American jewelers standardised it in the early 1900s, then added a handful of modern alternates through the 20th century as some original stones became rare or expensive, right up to tanzanite joining December's list in 2002. It's best understood as a well-loved jewelry tradition, not an astrological calculation.

Why do some months have more than one birthstone?
