BaZi (literally "Eight Characters") is the Chinese system of destiny analysis. The chart has four "pillars" — Year, Month, Day, Hour — each composed of one Heavenly Stem (10 possibilities) and one Earthly Branch (12 possibilities, the Chinese zodiac animals). The 8 characters describe the five-element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) balance of the native's constitution. The Day Master (Day Stem) is the primary character — the self — and the rest of the chart is read in relation to it.
