The method behind the number
How a name turns into a number.
Every letter is given a numerology value under two long-standing systems. Chaldean numerology — the older Babylonian-Vedic tradition — assigns values 1 through 8, with 9 held sacred and never assigned to a letter. Pythagorean numerology — the modern Western system taught in most numerology books — assigns 1 through 9 in a repeating A-to-Z cycle. Add up every letter's value, then reduce the sum by repeatedly adding its digits until one remains — unless that sum lands on 11, 22 or 33, a Master Number, which is preserved rather than reduced further. This result is also called your Expression Number, or Namank in Vedic terminology.

Does a nickname give a different number than my full legal name?

Yes. Any change in spelling changes which letters — and therefore which values — are being summed, so a nickname, a shortened name, or even a middle initial can genuinely shift the number.
