Amavasya is the new-moon day — when the Sun and Moon occupy the same point of the zodiac and the Moon is not visible. It marks the end of the lunar month. Spiritually significant for ancestor rituals (Pitru Tarpan), tantra, and inner work; conventionally inauspicious for marriage or housewarming. Major amavasyas include Mahalaya (preceding Navratri), Mauni (silent vow), and Diwali (Kartik amavasya).
