Vrishabha (Taurus): The Complete Rashi Guide

Vrishabha (Taurus): The Complete Rashi Guide
Vrishabha (Taurus) is the second rashi, ruled by Venus, and the one sign where the Moon is exalted. A complete guide to its temperament, its nakshatras, and what it means as a Moon sign and as a Lagna.

In one paragraph

Vrishabha (Taurus) is the second rashi of the sidereal zodiac, occupying 30 to 60 degrees of the ecliptic. It is ruled by Shukra (Venus), carries the earth element, and is fixed in modality (sthira rashi) — a combination that produces the steadiest, most sensory and most accumulative of the twelve signs. Its single most important technical fact is that Chandra, the Moon, is exalted in Vrishabha at 3 degrees, which makes this sign the zodiac's most favourable seat for the mind. Two things must be said before anything else. First, these are sidereal signs: because of the ayanamsha, currently about 24 degrees, your Vedic rashi is usually one sign earlier than the Western one you have been told — see what is ayanamsha. Second, in India "your rashi" means your Moon sign (Chandra Rashi), not your Sun sign, and every rashifal you read is calculated from it — see what is rashifal. Daily and weekly predictions for this sign live at /horoscope/taurus.

Two classical descriptors colour the readings: Vrishabha is a quadruped sign (chatushpada) and it is prishtodaya, a sign that rises by its hind part. Classical authors used the second to say Vrishabha's results arrive late but arrive fully.

What Vrishabha rashi is actually like

The temperament follows mechanically from three inputs, and it is worth deriving it rather than reciting adjectives.

Venus rules it. Shukra is the graha of bhoga — enjoyment, taste, beauty, comfort, relationship and the material forms that pleasure takes. A Venus-ruled sign therefore evaluates the world through the senses rather than through abstraction. Vrishabha natives typically know what they like, know it quickly, and are almost impossible to argue out of it.

It is an earth sign. Earth converts an idea into an object; the prithvi tattva signs are concerned with result, resource and durability. Combine earth with Venus and you get the Vrishabha signature: pleasure made permanent — not the experience of beauty but the ownership of it.

It is fixed. Sthira signs sustain what movable signs begin. Fixity is why Vrishabha is the most patient sign and simultaneously the most immovable one. The same mechanism produces both, and no honest reading separates them.

Vrishabha's virtue and its vice are the same trait measured twice: what looks like steadiness on a good day looks like stubbornness on a bad one. A fixed earth sign does not change position because it has been out-argued; it changes position when the ground it is standing on becomes uncomfortable.

In the Kalapurusha scheme, Vrishabha corresponds to the second house — accumulated wealth, family, food and speech. That is a background resonance rather than a prediction, but it explains why traditional Vrishabha description centres so heavily on voice, food and savings. See the 2nd house, dhana bhava.

Vrishabha as your Moon sign (Chandra Rashi)

This is the section that matters most, for two reasons.

The first is practical: in Indian astrology your rashi is your Moon sign. Your janma rashi, your rashifal, your nakshatra, your Vimshottari dasha sequence and your Sade Sati timing are all calculated from where the Moon stood at birth, not the Sun. If a reader has ever been told "I am Gemini" from a newspaper column and then found a Vedic chart calling them Vrishabha, the ayanamsha plus this Sun-versus-Moon distinction explains it entirely.

The second is technical, and it is unique to this sign: the Moon is exalted in Vrishabha, with the exact degree of exaltation at 3 degrees. No other sign holds the Moon's exaltation. Beyond that, Vrishabha 4 to 30 degrees is the Moon's mooltrikona — its zone of maximum functional strength. Taken together this means that the entire sign is favourable ground for the Moon, with the first three degrees being the most exalted point in the zodiac for the lunar principle.

In Jyotisha, Chandra signifies the manas — the perceiving, feeling, remembering mind — along with the mother, emotional security and the body's fluid rhythms. An exalted Moon therefore does not mean "happy". It means the mind is well-placed to hold its own shape. Practically, a Vrishabha Moon usually shows as:

  • Emotional steadiness others rely on. The mood has weight and inertia; it neither spikes nor crashes easily.
  • A strong sensory memory. Food, scent, music and place carry emotional information here far more than words do.
  • Security expressed materially. Comfort, savings and a settled home are not luxuries; they are the mechanism by which this mind stays regulated.
  • Deep attachment, slow release. Fixed-sign emotion binds hard: grief, grudges and loyalty all outlast expectation.

The honest counterweight: exaltation is a strength, not an immunity. An exalted Moon that is combust, badly aspected, or sitting in a difficult bhava will still deliver a difficult emotional life. Dignity by sign is only one of several strength measures — see exaltation and debilitation and what is shadbala for how classical astrology actually weighs a graha. For the Moon's full significations, see Chandra, the Moon.

Vrishabha as your Lagna

If Vrishabha rises on the eastern horizon at your birth moment, Venus becomes your Lagna lord and the entire house scheme follows from that one placement.

House Sign Lord
1st Vrishabha (Taurus) Venus
2nd Mithuna (Gemini) Mercury
3rd Karka (Cancer) Moon
4th Simha (Leo) Sun
5th Kanya (Virgo) Mercury
6th Tula (Libra) Venus
7th Vrishchika (Scorpio) Mars
8th Dhanu (Sagittarius) Jupiter
9th Makara (Capricorn) Saturn
10th Kumbha (Aquarius) Saturn
11th Meena (Pisces) Jupiter
12th Mesha (Aries) Mars

Three consequences follow, and they are the ones every classical text draws out.

Saturn is the yogakaraka. Shani rules the 9th (Makara) and the 10th (Kumbha) simultaneously — one trikona and one kendra. A single graha owning both categories is called a yogakaraka, and for Vrishabha Lagna that graha is Saturn. This is the sign's structural gift: a well-placed Shani here can build career and fortune together, usually slowly and usually through endurance rather than luck. See Shani, Saturn and raja yogas explained.

Jupiter is a functional malefic. Guru rules the 8th and the 11th for this Lagna, which is why classical authors treat the greatest natural benefic as unhelpful for Vrishabha ascendants — a genuinely counter-intuitive rule, and one that trips up beginners more than any other.

Venus is both Lagna lord and 6th lord. Shukra rules the 1st and the 6th (Tula), so the ruler of body and identity also rules debt, disease and conflict. Most traditions hold that Lagna lordship dominates and Venus stays benefic here, but the nuance is real: Vrishabha natives often find that their own appetites are the source of their own obstacles.

To know your Lagna you need an accurate birth time and birthplace, not just a date. Compute it at /lagna-rashi-nakshatra or generate a full chart at /kundli.

Shukra, the ruling graha

Here is the rule most sign-based content ignores: the condition of the ruling graha matters more than the sign label itself. Two people can both be "Vrishabha" and share almost nothing, because in one chart Venus is strong and unafflicted and in the other it is combust or trapped in a difficult house.

Venus owns Vrishabha and Tula, has its mooltrikona in Tula 0 to 15 degrees, is exalted in Meena at 27 degrees and debilitated in Kanya at 27 degrees. Vrishabha is Venus's own sign but not its mooltrikona — a small distinction that matters when comparing strengths.

Before reading a single trait, check four things: which bhava Venus occupies, how close it stands to the Sun (see combustion, astangata), which grahas aspect it, and whether its dasha is running (see what is a dasha). The full picture is in Shukra, Venus in Vedic astrology.

Grahas exalted or debilitated here

Graha Status in Vrishabha Exact degree
Chandra (Moon) Exalted (uchcha) 3 degrees
Any graha Debilitated (neecha) None

Vrishabha is one of the sign positions that carries an exaltation without carrying a corresponding debilitation, which is part of why it reads as such a benign sign. The mirror image is Vrishchika (Scorpio), where the Moon falls to its debilitation at 3 degrees — exaltation and debilitation always sit 180 degrees apart.

One honest caveat on tradition: some later texts assign Rahu's exaltation to Vrishabha, while others place it in Mithuna or Kanya. The classical seven exaltations listed above are stable across sources; the nodes' exaltation signs are not, and Kaalveda does not treat them as settled.

The nakshatras in this sign

The 27 nakshatras are the older and finer Indian layer beneath the 12 signs, and they are indigenous to India rather than borrowed. Vrishabha is spanned by three.

Nakshatra Span within Vrishabha Nakshatra lord Deity
Krittika (padas 2-4) 0 to 10 degrees Surya (Sun) Agni
Rohini (all four padas) 10 to 23 degrees 20 minutes Chandra (Moon) Prajapati
Mrigashira (padas 1-2) 23 degrees 20 minutes to 30 degrees Mangal (Mars) Soma

Rohini is the centrepiece, and it sits entirely inside this sign. Traditionally, Rohini is the Moon's favourite nakshatra — the best-loved of the twenty-seven consorts in the Daksha narrative, and the one the Moon is said to linger with. It is also ruled by the Moon, and it lies in the sign of the Moon's exaltation. That triple reinforcement is why Rohini is regarded as one of the most fertile, creative and materially productive nakshatras in the entire zodiac: growth, beauty, agriculture and manifestation are its keywords.

The flanking portions change the tone. Krittika 2-4, ruled by the Sun with Agni as deity, is sharp, purifying and noticeably less soft than the sign around it. Mrigashira 1-2, ruled by Mars with Soma as deity, is restless and searching — the seeker at the sign's far edge.

This matters practically, because your nakshatra lord starts your Vimshottari dasha sequence. A Vrishabha Moon begins life in a Sun, Moon or Mars mahadasha depending on which of the three it falls in — three quite different opening chapters inside one rashi. Find yours at /nakshatra, and read what is nakshatra and choghadiya.

Honest limits

Kaalveda would rather be trusted than believed, so the qualifications belong in the open.

One sign is one factor among many. A real reading weighs the Lagna, the bhava each graha occupies, the dignity of each graha, the aspects, the divisional charts and the running dasha. Sign-only descriptions are a starting vocabulary, not an analysis.

Exaltation is not a guarantee. An exalted Vrishabha Moon that is combust, afflicted, or in a difficult house can perform worse than a dignified Moon in an ordinary sign. Anyone promising that an exalted Moon means an easy emotional life is selling something.

The traditions genuinely disagree. Different ayanamsha values (Lahiri, Raman, Krishnamurti) can shift a borderline birth into the neighbouring sign. Nodal exaltations are unsettled. Some schools treat Venus's 6th lordship for this Lagna as a real blemish; others dismiss it. Where sources conflict, we say so rather than picking the flattering option.

The provenance is what it is. The 12-sign zodiac is Babylonian, roughly 450 to 400 BCE, and sidereal; horoscopy was assembled in Greco-Roman Egypt around 150 to 50 BCE. The nakshatras are older and Indian. Documented continuous Jyotisha transmission runs to about 2,000 years, not five thousand — see Vedic versus Western astrology.

Astrology is not advice. Nothing here substitutes for medical, legal, psychiatric or financial counsel. A chart describes tendencies and timing; it does not diagnose, prescribe or decide.
