Chandra (Moon) in Vedic Astrology: Significations, Houses and Remedies
Chandra is the karaka of the mind and the graha Indian astrology reads first - your rashi, your rashifal and your entire dasha sequence all come from the Moon. What it signifies, house by house, and how to steady it.

In one paragraph

Chandra — the Moon — is the graha Vedic astrology reads first. It is the karaka of manas, the mind: not intellect, which belongs to Mercury, but the felt, reactive, remembering, wanting part of you. It signifies the mother, emotion, the public and every fluid in the body. It rules Cancer, is exalted at 3° Taurus, debilitated at 3° Scorpio, and its mahadasha runs ten years. Three facts settle its rank: "my rashi" means your Moon sign, not your Sun sign; rashifal is written for the Moon sign; and the entire Vimshottari dasha sequence is calculated from the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Remove the Moon from a Jyotisha chart and the timing system collapses. Remove the Sun and you lose a significator.

Dignity of the Moon across the twelve signs

What Chandra signifies in Vedic astrology

The Moon's standing significations hold in every chart, whatever house it occupies:

  • Manas — the mind as feeling: mood, instinct, memory, imagination, the sense of safety.
  • The mother, and by extension nurture, milk, food and the felt experience of home.
  • The public — crowds, popularity, the mood of a market, anything held in common.
  • Fluids — water, plasma, lymph, tides; by body correspondence the chest and stomach.
  • Comfort, the emotional past, and the capacity to be soothed.

Manas needs a precise definition, because English flattens it. It is the processing surface: it takes in sense impressions and produces likes, dislikes and reactions. Buddhi, discriminating intelligence, belongs to Budha and Guru. So a brilliant chart can carry an unsteady Moon — the person reasons superbly and still cannot sleep.

Why the Moon outranks the Sun in Jyotisha

Western astrology is solar by default: the newspaper column invented in 1930 by the Sunday Express made the Sun sign the public face of astrology. Indian astrology never went that way, for structural reasons.

Question Western default Indian practice
"What sign are you?" Sun sign Rashi = Moon sign
Daily and yearly forecast Read from the Sun Rashifal read from the Moon
Timing of events Transits, progressions Vimshottari dasha, from the Moon's nakshatra
Second chart reading Sun as a lens Chandra Lagna — chart re-read from the Moon
Marriage matching Sun sign fit Nakshatra kootas

The third row is decisive. Vimshottari, the dasha system almost every Indian astrologer uses, starts from the exact degree of the Moon at birth. Your janma nakshatra fixes which period you were born into and how much of it remained; every period for the next 120 years follows from that one measurement. No other graha's position has that privilege.

There is a practical reason too. The Sun moves about one degree a day; the Moon moves thirteen, changing sign every two and a quarter days. It is the fastest-moving significator in the chart, and the most sensitive.

The Sun tells you what you are. The Moon tells you what your days feel like. Indian astrology, a practical craft aimed at lived experience, chose the second.

Chandra dignity: rulership, exaltation, debilitation

Property Value
Rules Cancer
Exalted Taurus, deep at 3°
Debilitated Scorpio, deep at 3°
Moolatrikona Taurus 4°–30°
Nature Benefic when waxing — conditional
Mahadasha length 10 years
Weekday, nakshatras Monday; Rohini, Hasta, Shravana

Two details repay attention. The Moon is the only graha whose exaltation and moolatrikona sign are the same — Taurus holds both, split at the third degree. And Taurus is ruled by Venus, Scorpio by Mars: the Moon is strongest as a guest of comfort, weakest as a guest of intensity.

Waxing and waning: paksha bala

Chandra is the one graha whose benefic nature is conditional on its phase. Classical texts do not call a waning Moon evil; they call it weak, and weakness in the significator of the mind reads as depletion, not harm.

  • Shukla paksha — the bright fortnight, from new Moon (amavasya) to full Moon (purnima). The Moon is waxing, and benefic.
  • Krishna paksha — the dark fortnight, full Moon back to new. The Moon is waning and progressively weaker; near amavasya many authorities call it malefic.

The strength scheme shadbala names this paksha bala, counted under kala bala, temporal strength. The logic is visual and unembarrassed: a Moon full of light supports a mind full of light.

Separately, a Moon close to the Sun is dark and weak whatever the fortnight — this is combustion, and the two conditions overlap near the new Moon. The threshold usually quoted is about 12 degrees of separation, but authorities genuinely differ on the figure and on whether to measure by degree or tithi. Each tithi is exactly 12 degrees between Moon and Sun — which is why the Panchang and the Moon's strength read the same measurement.

So anyone born a day either side of amavasya has a structurally weak Moon by every method — a statement about emotional resource, not worth or capability.

Chandra through the twelve houses

Read these as tendencies modified by sign, aspect and phase — a waning Moon in the 4th is not a full Moon in the 4th.

  • 1st — Identity fused with feeling: changeable, receptive, visibly moody; self-image shaped by the mother.
  • 2nd — Family, speech and savings carry emotional weight. A soothing voice; money that fluctuates with mood.
  • 3rd — A restless, communicative mind; writing and short journeys. Stability comes from being allowed to express things.
  • 4th — The Moon's natural territory: home, mother, land, inner peace. Best for contentment, worst for homesickness.
  • 5th — Creative and romantic imagination, a bond with children, fluctuating speculative luck.
  • 6th — Worry becomes a habit. Energy goes into service, health routines and disputes; the stomach takes the strain.
  • 7th — Needs partnership to feel settled; strong public dealing; relationships rise and fall like tides.
  • 8th — Depth, secrecy, a pull towards the occult and to crisis. Classically hard for peace of mind.
  • 9th — Devotional, philosophical, well-travelled; faith felt rather than argued.
  • 10th — A public-facing career — crowds, food, water, hospitality, media. Reputation moves in cycles.
  • 11th — Gains through networks and the public; wide friendship circles; income in waves.
  • 12th — A rich interior life, foreign residence, hospitals and retreat. Sleep and dreams often disturbed.

Strong Chandra and weak Chandra

Strong Chandra Weak or afflicted Chandra
Emotional steadiness under pressure Mood swings with no proportion to events
Easy rapport, popularity Withdrawal; feeling unseen in company
Warm relationship with the mother Distance or loss around the mother
Sleeps well, recovers quickly Broken sleep, rumination
Imagination that produces work Imagination that produces anxiety
Comfortable with care Either clinging or refusing all support

Classical texts name configurations here: Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhara yogas when grahas flank the Moon, Kemadruma yoga when nothing does — a yoga of loneliness carrying more cancellation clauses than almost any other in the literature, which tells you how rarely it means what its name suggests. Gaja Kesari yoga, Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon, is its antidote.

On mental health, be careful and be plain. An afflicted Moon describes a tendency — towards rumination, towards emotional weather, towards needing more rest than those around you. It is not a diagnosis, it cannot be one, and no configuration predicts a psychiatric condition. If you are struggling, the next step is a doctor or a qualified mental health professional: a chart is not a substitute for medical care. What the Moon offers is language for a pattern you already feel.

The Moon and the nakshatras

The **27 nakshatras** are indigenous to India and pre-Hellenistic — there is no Mesopotamian prototype for a 27-fold division, unlike the 12-sign zodiac. The scheme is lunar by construction: the Moon's sidereal cycle of about 27.3 days means it occupies roughly one nakshatra per day. That makes it the gateway to three systems:

  1. Dashas. Your janma nakshatra fixes your starting Vimshottari period, and the Moon's degree within it fixes the balance of dasha remaining. Everything downstream is arithmetic.
  2. Matching. Gun Milan runs almost entirely on the Moon: most of the eight *kootas* come from the nakshatras and Moon signs of the two charts. The honest caveat — the 36-point Ashtakoota scorecard is early-modern, 16th–17th century, though the nakshatras are far older.
  3. Naming. The namakarana syllable comes from the pada the Moon occupied. 27 × 4 = 108 = 12 signs × 9 navamsas, which is why navamsa boundaries coincide exactly with nakshatra padas.

Each nakshatra has a graha lord feeding the dasha sequence; Chandra itself lords Rohini, Hasta and Shravana. Look yours up at the nakshatra finder.

Chandra dasha: the ten-year period

The Moon's mahadasha runs 10 years within the 120-year Vimshottari cycle, between Surya's 6 and Mangal's 7.

A Chandra period brings emotional life to the foreground: home, mother, property, food, the public, comfort and care. Whether that reads as nourishment or upheaval depends on the Moon's own condition — phase, sign, house, and what aspects it.

The caveat matters more than the label. A dasha does not deliver a graha's textbook keywords; it delivers through the houses that graha rules and occupies in your chart. The Moon always rules Cancer, so a Chandra dasha activates whichever house Cancer falls in for your ascendant — a different domain entirely for a Capricorn rising than a Leo rising. Anyone describing "Moon dasha" without your ascendant is describing a generic. A premium Kundli report sets out the sequence with dates.

Remedies for Chandra

Upaya means that by which one approaches — a discipline, not a transaction.

Remedy Detail
Weekday Monday is Chandra's day
Classical stone Pearl (moti), set in silver
Offerings White things — rice, milk, white cloth, camphor
Water Offering water; time near water
Beeja mantra Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah (transliterations vary)

Three honest notes. Gemstones are chart-specific, not graha-specific. A pearl strengthens the Moon, but that is only desirable if the Moon rules helpful houses in your chart; prescribing one from a Moon sign alone is guesswork — and Kaalveda sells no stones, malas or physical goods of any kind. Second, the Monday fast (somvar vrat) is devotionally directed at Shiva; folk practice attaches it to the Moon through Shiva's crescent — an association, not a rule. Third, the most reliable Moon remedies are the least mystical: regular sleep, regular meals, time near water, and repairing the relationship with your mother. For a computed suggestion, the rudraksha tool works from your chart.

Honest limits

  • There is no demonstrated mechanism. The stock argument — the Moon moves the oceans, so it must move you — does not survive arithmetic: its tidal effect on a human body is vanishingly small, smaller than that of a nearby wall. The Moon may be a fine symbol for the mind; it is not a physical cause of your mood.
  • The "lunar lunacy" effect has been tested and has not held up. Studies of hospital admissions, births and crime around the full Moon repeatedly fail to find a reliable effect.
  • Authorities disagree on the combustion threshold, on where waning becomes malefic, and on whether tithi or degree is the right measure — live disagreements, not settled doctrine.
  • "Rashi" is ambiguous — Moon sign in India, Sun sign in the West. Since Jyotisha is sidereal, the ayanamsha gap now about 24 degrees, the labels rarely match anyway.
  • Precision depends on birth time. A pada shifts roughly every six hours: an approximate time gives the right Moon sign, but the dasha balance can be materially wrong.
  • Nothing here is medical advice. Astrology cannot diagnose, treat or predict any health condition, and should never delay care.
