Exactly what to enter, and why each field matters

A kundali is calculated, not chosen. Three inputs determine every line on it.

Date of birth

The easiest field and the least dangerous. The outer grahas move slowly — Saturn takes roughly two and a half years per sign — so a one-day error barely touches them. It does change your tithi, nakshatra and dasha start point, because the Moon covers about thirteen degrees a day. Use the birth record, not the naming ceremony.

One trap: in Vedic reckoning the day begins at sunrise, not midnight. Born at 1 a.m., the panchang day a traditional pandit uses may be the previous calendar date — which is why a printed **Panchang** can look a day out of step.

Time of birth

This is the field people guess at, and the one that does the most damage.

The Earth turns three hundred and sixty degrees every twenty-four hours, which means the zodiac rolls past the eastern horizon at roughly one degree every four minutes. A whole sign rises about every two hours, so your Lagna — and the numbering of all twelve houses with it — changes completely on that cycle.

Two children born in the same hospital ninety minutes apart can share nearly identical planetary positions and still receive completely different charts, because the house framework has rotated underneath those planets.

Use the hospital record, the birth certificate, or the family's written note, in that order. "Around six in the morning" is not a birth time; it is a range with four possible Ascendants in it. If that is all you have, there is a section below on precisely this.

Place of birth

Place fixes the horizon. The same instant produces a different Ascendant in Chennai than in Delhi, because latitude changes the angle at which the ecliptic crosses the horizon, and longitude sets the true local time.

Two details separate careful tools from careless ones. Coordinates must come from a real place database, not a guessed centroid. And — the one that quietly ruins charts — the timezone must be the one in force on your birth date, not today's. India standardised on IST in 1906 and ran wartime advances in the 1940s; many countries changed offsets repeatedly. Applying the modern offset to a 1955 birth can be half an hour or more wrong: a quarter to half a sign of Ascendant.

Enter the town of birth, not the district headquarters, unless the town is genuinely absent from the database.

What a generated kundali contains

A complete online kundali is several layers rendered as one diagram plus supporting tables.

Note there is no Uranus, Neptune or Pluto. Classical Jyotisha uses only the seven visible bodies plus the two nodes. A tool that adds the outer planets is doing something Western rather than Vedic — fine if it says so, misleading if it does not.

How to read your online kundali in a sensible order

Most people bounce off their own chart because they read it in the wrong order. Do it like this.

Step one: start with the Lagna

Find your rising sign. Everything else is positioned relative to it, and in Jyotisha the Lagna outranks the Sun sign — if you have only ever known your "star sign" from a newspaper column, this is the correction that matters most. Then find the Lagna lord, the graha ruling that sign, and see which house it occupies. That single placement summarises where your life energy goes.

Step two: read the Moon sign and nakshatra

Next the Moon. Its sign is your rashi — what traditional Indian astrology treats as "your sign", and the one used for **daily horoscopes**. Its nakshatra refines that considerably: twenty-seven divisions rather than twelve, so far less generic. Step three: walk the grahas house by house

Now go house by house, first to twelfth, asking three plain questions of each:

• Which sign is on it, and which graha rules that sign?
• Is anything sitting in it?
• Where has its ruler gone?

Resist looking up each placement's "meaning" in isolation. A graha is modified by its sign, its house, the company it keeps and the aspects it receives. Isolated lookups are how bad readings are made.

Step four: check the dasha you are running now

Finally, your Vimshottari dasha — the mahadasha and antardasha currently active. A strongly placed Jupiter matters far more during a Jupiter period than a Ketu one. A chart tells you what is present; the dasha tells you what is switched on.

How to tell a good online kundali tool from a bad one

Free generators are everywhere and they do not agree with one another. That is not a scandal — it is usually a difference in method. The problem is when the method is not disclosed. Use this checklist.

The ayanamsha is the commonest source of "two websites gave me different charts". Sidereal astrology measures from a fixed starting point in the sky, and there are competing estimates of where it is. Lahiri is the Indian government standard and the default almost everywhere in India; Raman and KP differ by a fraction of a degree upwards. Near a sign boundary, that fraction decides the sign. A tool that names its ayanamsha is being straight with you; one that does not may simply not know.

And the loudest warning sign of all: a free chart that instantly produces a dire dosha beside a remedy you can buy. Fear is a sales technique, not an astrological finding.

What to do if you do not know your birth time

This is extremely common, and it does not disqualify you.

Still reliable without an exact time:

• All nine graha positions by sign — a few hours rarely moves them
• Your Moon sign, and often your nakshatra
• The aspects between grahas, and the broad dasha sequence

No longer reliable:

• The Lagna, and therefore every house placement
• Anything house-dependent: career, marriage, property, longevity
• Divisional charts, which are degree-sensitive and will be badly off

So generate the chart with your best estimate, read the Moon and the grahas by sign, and refuse to draw house-based conclusions. If the time genuinely matters, the traditional remedy is birth-time rectification: a practitioner works backwards from dated life events to narrow the Ascendant. No automatic generator does this. Be honest about it with whoever reads for you. An astrologer told the time is approximate reads differently — and better — than one who is not.

Honest limits

A kundali generated online is exactly as good as its inputs and its ephemeris, and no better.

It does not predict events. It describes structure and timing. Classical texts are consistent that the chart shows tendency, and that effort — purushartha — operates within it. Any tool announcing a dated event is overreaching.

It is not a medical, legal or financial instrument. No chart should be the reason you delay treatment, sign a contract or move money.

Automated interpretation is pattern-matching, not judgement. Software applies rules; a practitioner weighs the contradictions between them. The honest thing is to say which you are getting.

Schools genuinely disagree. Traditions differ on Manglik rules, on which vargas carry weight, and on remedies. A flagged dosha means a rule fired, not that a verdict has been reached.

A chart cannot know what you did not enter. Garbage time in, garbage houses out — which is why this article spends so long on three fields.
