Purva Phalguni Nakshatra: Traits, Deity, Pada and Compatibility
Purva Phalguni is the eleventh nakshatra, 13.20 to 26.40 Leo, ruled by Venus and presided over by Bhaga. Its symbol is the front legs of a bed. Here is what it means for character, padas, dasha and matching.

In one paragraph

Purva Phalguni nakshatra is the eleventh of the twenty-seven, spanning 13 degrees 20 minutes to 26 degrees 40 minutes of sidereal Leo, ruled by Venus and presided over by Bhaga, one of the Adityas and the god who apportions to each being the share it is due. Its symbol is the front legs of a bed — rest, pleasure, intimacy and recreation, the deliberate pause before work begins. Because Venus rules it, anyone whose Moon sat here at birth opens life in a Venus mahadasha of 20 years, a fact that shapes more of a chart's early story than any personality description will. Its gana is Manushya, its nadi Madhya, its yoni the rat. Paired with Uttara Phalguni — the back legs of the same bed — it forms the classical couplet of enjoyment and the commitments that follow it. Remember throughout: your janma nakshatra is where the Moon was at your birth, never the Sun.

The four padas of Purva Phalguni with their navamsa signs

At a glance

Field Value
Position in sequence 11th of 27
Span (sidereal) 13.20 to 26.40 Leo
Rashi Simha (Leo), entirely
Ruling graha Venus (Shukra)
Deity Bhaga
Symbol Front legs of a bed
Gana Manushya (human)
Nadi Madhya (middle)
Yoni Rat
First Vimshottari mahadasha Venus, 20 years
Naming syllables (namakaran) Mo, Ta, Ti, Tu

Each nakshatra spans exactly 13 degrees 20 minutes, divided into four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes. That arithmetic matters: 27 nakshatras x 4 padas = 108 = 12 signs x 9 navamsas, which is why every pada boundary is also a navamsa boundary. Purva Phalguni sits wholly inside Leo, never straddling a sign, and is usually identified in the sky with Zosma and Chertan.

What the symbol and deity actually mean

This is where a nakshatra stops being a label and starts being useful. Naming Bhaga and a bed explains nothing on its own.

Bhaga, the god of the share you are due

Bhaga is one of the Adityas, the solar sons of Aditi, and his name is a plain Sanskrit noun before it is ever a god's name. Bhaga means share, portion, allotment, dispensed good fortune. It is the root of bhagya — the ordinary word for destiny or luck — and of bhagavan, "the one who possesses bhaga". So this deity is not a personification of pleasure in the abstract. He is the distributor: the power deciding what portion of the world's abundance arrives at your door, and when.

That is a subtly different idea from "wealth". Bhaga is not accumulation but allotment — the inheritance, the family share, the windfall, what comes to you because of who you are rather than what you built. The Rigveda invokes him in hymns of prosperity and in the great wedding hymn, because a marriage is a moment when shares are formally redistributed between families.

The Puranic layer adds a striking detail. At Daksha's sacrifice, when Shiva's wrath took form as Virabhadra, Bhaga's eyes were put out — the god of fortune left blind. Commentators draw the obvious moral: fortune does not look at who it lands on. Note the layering, though: the blinding is Puranic narrative, not Rigvedic, and the two strata should not be flattened into one "ancient" claim.

Bhaga answers a specific question, and it is not "will I be rich?" It is: what portion is coming to me, and can I enjoy it when it arrives? The second half of that question is what Purva Phalguni is really about.

The front legs of a bed

The symbol is a bed or couch seen from its head end — the two front legs, the side you get into. Uttara Phalguni takes the back legs. The image is not primarily about sleep. In classical usage it means rest, recreation, intimacy, convalescence and hospitality: the furniture of not working.

This is why the tradition reads Purva Phalguni as the nakshatra of creative leisure, the restorative pause that makes effort possible. A bed is where you recover, where you dream, where a guest is honoured. It is a generous symbol, and generosity toward oneself is the trait most consistently attributed here. Its shadow is equally classical: the bed is also where indulgence and idleness live.

Two further placements sharpen this. Muhurta texts group Purva Phalguni among the Ugra or fierce nakshatras, with Bharani, Magha, Purva Ashadha and Purva Bhadrapada. And Phalguna, the lunar month, is named for the Phalguni pair — its full Moon falls here, which is why Holi, the festival of colour and licence, belongs to this stretch of the zodiac.

Character of someone born under Purva Phalguni nakshatra

Read the three ingredients together — Venus as ruler, Bhaga as deity, a bed as symbol, all inside the Sun's own sign of Leo — and the picture is specific rather than generic.

  • Warmth used deliberately. Venus in Leo is charm with an audience. Natives are typically hospitable, socially fluent and physically expressive — the person who organises the gathering rather than merely attends it.
  • A refined relationship with comfort. Not merely liking nice things but an actual aesthetic, applied to rooms, food, clothing and the design of a day. Beauty is treated as a legitimate priority.
  • Creative output tied to leisure. The classical association is with performance, music, design and the arts, and with work that emerges from unstructured time rather than a schedule.
  • Generosity that expects reciprocity. Bhaga distributes; so do these natives. But the Manushya gana is transactional in the honest sense, and slights around sharing land hard.
  • A structural tension. Venus rules the nakshatra while the Sun rules the sign, and the classical friendship tables make Venus and the Sun mutual non-friends. Hence the recognisable Purva Phalguni conflict: the appetite for ease versus the appetite for recognition. Pleasure wants privacy; the lion wants a stage.
  • The credible weaknesses. Procrastination dressed as discernment; overspending on atmosphere; vanity; and a tendency to stay in comfortable arrangements past their expiry date. None of these are fated — they are the failure mode of a strength.

The sign and Venus context is set out in the **Leo rashi guide** and the **Venus profile**.

The four padas

Leo is a fixed sign, so its navamsa sequence begins at Sagittarius. That places Purva Phalguni's four padas in Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer navamsas. Because pada and navamsa boundaries coincide exactly, the pada tells you the D9 sign without a second calculation.

Pada Sidereal span Navamsa sign Navamsa lord How it colours the placement
1 13.20 to 16.40 Leo Aries Mars The most assertive quarter. Pleasure pursued directly; strong physical drive, quick enthusiasms, shortest fuse.
2 16.40 to 20.00 Leo Taurus Venus Venus rules nakshatra and navamsa both, making this the most purely Venusian pada: sensual, artistic, comfort-seeking, acquisitive.
3 20.00 to 23.20 Leo Gemini Mercury Verbal, social, playful. Charm through wit and conversation; the performer, the host, the negotiator.
4 23.20 to 26.40 Leo Cancer Moon The most domestic quarter. Pleasure located in home and family, with greater sensitivity to rejection.

Traditional namakaran assigns a first syllable to each pada in order — Mo, Ta, Ti, Tu — which is how many Indian first names are still chosen. The pada matters far beyond naming, because the navamsa is the chart of marital and inner life; see the **Navamsa D9 chart**.

The ruling graha and your dasha

This is the nakshatra's single most important practical function, worth more than every personality paragraph above combined.

Purva Phalguni is ruled by Venus. In the Vimshottari system, the graha ruling your janma nakshatra is the graha whose mahadasha runs first — so a person born under Purva Phalguni begins life inside a Venus mahadasha of 20 years, the longest of the nine.

Two consequences follow:

  1. You do not get the whole twenty years. Only the balance remains at birth, and the proportion already elapsed depends on how far the Moon had travelled through the nakshatra. A Moon at 14 degrees Leo has barely entered, leaving nearly the full twenty years; a Moon at 26 degrees Leo has almost finished, leaving perhaps a year. Two people born the same week can have completely different dasha maps.
  2. Childhood and early adulthood are Venus-flavoured. Whether that reads as artistic training, early comfort, early relationships or early indulgence depends on where Venus actually sits, its dignity and its aspects. The dasha lord is a lens, not a verdict.

Because the balance is proportional to a Moon position measured in minutes of arc, do not eyeball it. Get the exact Moon longitude and dasha balance from a computed chart — the **free kundli** or the **lagna, rashi and nakshatra finder** gives you both. The whole 120-year cycle is explained in **what is a dasha**.

Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni as a pair

The two Phalgunis are one image split across two nakshatras, and neither reads correctly alone.

Purva Phalguni Uttara Phalguni
Symbol Front legs of a bed Back legs of a bed
Deity Bhaga, the dispenser of shares Aryaman, patron of contracts and the marriage bond
Ruler Venus Sun
First mahadasha 20 years 6 years
Theme Enjoyment, courtship, rest Obligation, patronage, the kept promise

Purva Phalguni is the pleasure; Uttara Phalguni is the contract that pleasure incurs. Hence muhurta tradition treats them differently: Uttara Phalguni is a fixed (Dhruva) nakshatra favoured for weddings, while Purva Phalguni is Ugra. Together they cover rest and the commitments that follow it — a fair description of a marriage.

In Gun Milan

Six of the eight kutas in the 36-point Ashtakoota scorecard are computed from the nakshatra, not the rashi.

  • Gana: Manushya (human). Pairs smoothly with other Manushya nakshatras and reasonably with Deva ones. The weakest combination is Manushya with Rakshasa, where this kuta loses most of its six points.
  • Nadi: Madhya (middle). Nadi kuta carries the heaviest weight at 8 points, and identical nadi conventionally scores zero. A Purva Phalguni native paired with any other Madhya nadi nakshatra therefore takes an eight-point hit before anything else is considered. This one rule causes more rejected matches than all the others combined.
  • Yoni: rat. Shared with neighbouring Magha. In the classical yoni enmity table the rat's natural opponent is the cat (Punarvasu and Ashlesha), which scores lowest on that kuta.

The mechanics are explained in **how kundli matching works**, and you can run a real score at **Gun Milan**.

Compatibility

Plainly: a single kuta is not a result, and 36 points is not a relationship. A pairing can lose all eight nadi points and function well; it can score 30 and fail. Ashtakoota is a screening heuristic from the early-modern period, not a Vedic one, built for arranged introductions between families with no other information.

What the nakshatra genuinely contributes is temperamental description. Purva Phalguni's Venusian warmth sits easily with partners who value hospitality, aesthetics and unhurried time, and chafes against a partner who treats leisure as waste. Where a score is low, read the whole chart — the seventh house, Venus, the Moon and the navamsa — rather than abandoning a match or buying a remedy. Start with the **7th house**.

Honest limits

  • A nakshatra is one factor among many. Lagna, the Moon's sign, the dispositor of Venus, the running dasha and the transits all outrank it in an actual reading. Nobody should be characterised by their janma nakshatra alone.
  • No nakshatra is bad. Purva Phalguni's Ugra classification is a muhurta rule about choosing times for activities, not a statement about people born under it. When Ugra, gandanta or "difficult nakshatra" framings are used to sell urgency or expensive remedies, recognise the pattern — fear-selling is the most common commercial use of nakshatra doctrine, and it is not what the classical texts do with these categories.
  • Traditions disagree. The pada-to-navamsa mapping is unanimous; the character attributions are not. Authorities give differing trait lists, and the symbol is variously described as a bed, a couch or a hammock. Where sources differ, we say so rather than picking one and calling it settled.
  • Ayanamsha changes the answer. Nakshatra is a sidereal measurement, and a different ayanamsha can move a borderline Moon into the adjacent nakshatra, changing the entire dasha sequence. See **what is ayanamsha**.
  • This is not advice. Nothing here substitutes for medical, legal or financial counsel. Jyotisha describes timing and disposition; it does not diagnose, and it should never be used to defer treatment or a real decision.
