Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra: Traits, Deity, Pada and Compatibility
By Kaalveda Research Team
In one paragraph
Uttara Phalguni nakshatra is the twelfth of the 27 nakshatras, running from 26 degrees 40 minutes of Leo to 10 degrees 00 minutes of Virgo. It is ruled by the Sun, presided over by Aryaman — an Aditya who governs patronage, friendship, hospitality and the customs that hold a household together — and symbolised by the back legs of a bed. Where its twin Purva Phalguni is the enjoyment, Uttara Phalguni is the promise kept: not romance but marriage, not attraction but partnership, not the celebration but the arrangement that outlives it. This is why the tradition has always favoured it for weddings and for anything meant to last. Your janma nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth, never the Sun. And because the Sun rules this nakshatra, a person born under it begins life in a Sun mahadasha of 6 years — the shortest of the nine, and the single most practical fact your nakshatra gives you.
Uttara Phalguni nakshatra at a glance
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Number | 12 of 27 |
| Span (sidereal) | 26.40 Leo to 10.00 Virgo |
| Rashi | Simha (Leo) into Kanya (Virgo) |
| Ruling graha | Sun (Surya) |
| Deity | Aryaman |
| Symbol | Back legs of a bed |
| Gana | Manushya (human) |
| Nadi | Adi |
| Yoni | Cow |
| First mahadasha | Sun, 6 years |
Two structural points. Every nakshatra spans exactly 13 degrees 20 minutes, divided into four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes each. And 27 x 4 padas = 108 = 12 signs x 9 navamsas — pada boundaries and navamsa boundaries are the same boundaries, which is why the padas are not decorative. Check where your own Moon falls with the lagna, rashi and nakshatra finder or a full janam kundli, and see the nakshatra hub plus this nakshatra's own page, Uttara Phalguni.
What the symbol and deity actually mean
This is the part of a nakshatra that most writing skips, and it is the part that does the work. Uttara Phalguni is not "the friendly one". It is a specific image attached to a specific Vedic deity, and the whole reading follows from both.
Aryaman, the Aditya of custom and contract
Aryaman is one of the Adityas, the sons of Aditi, and in the Rigveda he appears constantly in a triad with Mitra and Varuna. Comparative scholarship reads that triad as a division of social binding: Varuna holds the oath and the sovereign order, Mitra holds the contract and alliance between equals, and Aryaman holds custom, kinship, hospitality and the rules of marriage. He is the patron, in the old and literal sense: the one whose favour makes another person's life workable.
Aryaman is invoked directly in the Vedic marriage hymn, and is associated with the ancestral path — aryamnah panthah, the road walked by those who honoured their obligations. The deity is unusually coherent: Aryaman is the god of the arrangement that holds after the feeling has passed.
The back legs of the bed
The Phalguni pair share one symbol split in two. Purva Phalguni takes the front legs of a bed; Uttara Phalguni takes the back legs. The front is where you get in — pleasure, courtship, the licence to enjoy. The back is what carries the weight when nobody is looking.
The bed is the same bed. Purva Phalguni is the invitation; Uttara Phalguni is the structure that has to hold once the invitation is accepted. One is the wedding night, the other is the marriage.
This is also why Uttara Phalguni belongs to the small group of dhruva or fixed nakshatras — with Rohini, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada — traditionally chosen in muhurta for permanent undertakings: marriage, laying foundations, planting trees, coronations, signing anything you intend to honour. The logic is thematic consistency: you begin a permanent thing under a nakshatra whose entire meaning is permanence.
Character of someone born under Uttara Phalguni
Read the character from the ruler, deity and symbol, not from adjectives.
- Solar dignity, not solar display. The Sun gives self-possession, a sense of one's own standing, and genuine discomfort with being seen as unreliable. Reputation matters to Uttara Phalguni natives — not vanity so much as the wish to be someone whose word is worth something. See the Sun in Vedic astrology.
- Patronage runs both ways. Aryaman's people tend to become the ones others rely on: the sibling who handles the paperwork, the colleague who quietly fixes the process, the friend whose house you can turn up to.
- Contract-mindedness. They prefer things stated; vague arrangements make them uneasy. Excellent in partnerships, institutional roles and long client relationships, and impatient with people who treat commitments as provisional.
- The Leo-to-Virgo shift is real. The early degrees carry Simha's regal, generous, somewhat proud tone; the later degrees carry Kanya's service, analysis and craft. A Moon at 28 Leo and a Moon at 9 Virgo are both Uttara Phalguni and genuinely different people. Compare the Leo rashi guide and the Virgo rashi guide.
- The characteristic difficulty is a tendency to over-commit and then carry it silently — the back legs of the bed do not complain. Resentment here is usually the residue of an obligation nobody asked them to take on.
The four padas
Each pada maps to one navamsa sign, and the pada is where the same nakshatra becomes four different placements. Traditional namakaran assigns a first syllable per pada, which is why families still name children from the birth nakshatra.
| Pada | Degrees (sidereal) | Rashi | Navamsa | Syllable | Colouring |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 26.40 to 30.00 Leo | Simha | Sagittarius | Te | The most idealistic pada. Solar pride meets Jupiter's ethics: dharma as a personal standard, teaching, advising, patronage on principle. |
| 2 | 0.00 to 3.20 Virgo | Kanya | Capricorn | To | The most durable. Saturn's navamsa on a Sun-ruled nakshatra in an earth sign — duty, administration, slow institutional building, obligations honoured to the letter. |
| 3 | 3.20 to 6.40 Virgo | Kanya | Aquarius | Pa | Saturn again but airborne: systems, networks, the collective. Service to a group rather than a person; reform-minded, sometimes coolly detached. |
| 4 | 6.40 to 10.00 Virgo | Kanya | Pisces | Pi | Jupiter's water navamsa softens the analysis into compassion. Caretaking, counselling, quiet sacrifice — and the greatest risk of over-giving. |
Notice the arc: regal in pada 1, administrative in pada 2, systemic in pada 3, compassionate in pada 4 — the Leo-into-Virgo movement made precise. For why the navamsa column carries so much weight, read the D9 navamsa chart explainer.
The ruling graha and your dasha
This is the nakshatra's most important practical function.
The Vimshottari dasha sequence you are living through is determined by the nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth. The ruler of that nakshatra is the graha whose mahadasha runs first. For Uttara Phalguni, that ruler is the Sun, and the Sun mahadasha is 6 years — the shortest period in the 120-year Vimshottari cycle.
| Graha | Mahadasha length |
|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 years |
| Venus | 20 years |
| Sun | 6 years |
| Moon | 10 years |
| Mars | 7 years |
| Rahu | 18 years |
| Jupiter | 16 years |
| Saturn | 19 years |
| Mercury | 17 years |
Two refinements matter. First, you almost never get the full six years: the proportion already elapsed depends on how far the Moon had travelled through Uttara Phalguni at birth. A Moon at the very start of the nakshatra keeps nearly all six years; a Moon near 10 Virgo may have only months of Sun dasha left before Moon mahadasha begins. Second, the sequence after the Sun is fixed — Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus — so an Uttara Phalguni birth means the Moon and Mars periods dominate childhood and youth, with Rahu's 18 years typically covering the working prime. The dasha explainer covers the mechanics in full.
In Gun Milan
Uttara Phalguni's matching attributes are Manushya gana, Adi nadi and Cow yoni. Note that six of the eight kutas in the 36-point Ashtakoota scorecard are computed from the nakshatra, not from the sign — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi lean on nakshatra data, while only Graha Maitri and Bhakoot are read primarily from the rashi. When people say "our signs match", they have usually looked at the smaller half of the system.
| Kuta | Uttara Phalguni value | Behaviour in matching |
|---|---|---|
| Gana (max 6) | Manushya | Full score with another Manushya; near-full with Deva; a heavy deduction against Rakshasa. Tables differ slightly between schools on the Deva-Manushya cell. |
| Nadi (max 8) | Adi | Same-nadi pairings score zero. The other Adi nakshatras are Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. |
| Yoni (max 4) | Cow | Full 4 with the other Cow nakshatra, Uttara Bhadrapada. Zero against the Tiger yoni — Chitra and Vishakha — which is the classical cow-tiger enmity. |
The Adi nadi result trips people up, because Nadi koota carries the largest single weight in the scorecard — 8 of 36 points. Two Adi-nadi charts lose all eight before anything else is assessed, enough to drag an otherwise workable total under the conventional 18-point threshold. Our Gun Milan tool computes all eight kutas, and how kundli matching works walks through what each one is actually measuring.
Compatibility
The honest summary: Uttara Phalguni matches well with the other Manushya-gana nakshatras and with charts of a different nadi, and it does its best work with partners who take agreements as seriously as it does. Uttara Bhadrapada is the textbook yoni match. Chitra and Vishakha score zero on yoni — which is a deduction, not a verdict.
That distinction is the whole point. A single kuta is not a compatibility result. Eight kutas produce a total; the total is one input; and it says nothing about the two seventh houses, the two Venus and Mars placements, or the dasha periods each person will be living through during the marriage. Treat the score as a structured second opinion, never as a permission slip or a refusal.
Honest limits
A few things stated plainly, because Kaalveda would rather be trusted than dramatic.
- A nakshatra is one factor among many. Your Moon's nakshatra sets the dasha sequence and contributes to matching. It does not override the lagna, the Moon's own sign and house, or the rest of the chart. Anyone describing your whole personality from one nakshatra is padding.
- No nakshatra is "bad", and Uttara Phalguni's flattering reputation is its own trap. Because it is the classic marriage nakshatra, it gets written up in glowing terms. That is as unhelpful as the fear-selling attached to Mula or Ashlesha: the difficult nakshatra framing and the auspicious nakshatra framing are the same commercial reflex pointed in opposite directions, and both are heavily used to sell remedies. Kaalveda sells computed reports and chart tools, not objects that promise to fix a nakshatra.
- Nadi dosha is a scorecard deduction, not a diagnosis. The 36-point Ashtakoota system and the Mangal Dosh doctrine are early-modern, roughly 16th to 17th century — the nakshatras they use are genuinely ancient, but the scorecard built on top of them is not. Astrologers disagree openly about how much weight Nadi should carry.
- The nakshatras themselves are indigenous to India and pre-Hellenistic. Unlike the 12-sign zodiac, which is Babylonian, there is no Mesopotamian prototype for a 27-fold division of the ecliptic. Documented continuous transmission of Jyotisha is around 2,000 years, not 5,000.
- Your degrees depend on the ayanamsha. Jyotisha is sidereal, and the sidereal-tropical gap is currently around 24 degrees. A Moon near a boundary — 26.40 Leo or 10.00 Virgo — can land in a neighbouring nakshatra under a different ayanamsha setting, which changes the entire dasha sequence. Always compute from an accurate birth time.
- Astrology is not medical, legal or financial advice. Nothing here substitutes for a doctor, a lawyer or a qualified financial adviser.
