Significance
Guru Purnima honors the guru-shishya (teacher-student) tradition central to Indian spiritual and academic life, recognizing the guru as the one who dispels darkness (gu) and brings light (ru).
History & story
The day is dedicated to Ved Vyasa, traditionally credited with compiling the four Vedas and authoring the Mahabharata and the Puranas, and is also significant in Buddhist tradition as the day Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath.
