Hartalika Teej falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, one day before Ganesh Chaturthi, and is one of the most demanding vrata (votive fasts) in the Hindu calendar — observed without food or water for a full day and night by married women for their husbands' well-being, and by unmarried women seeking a good spouse.
Significance
The fast reenacts the legend of Parvati's own austere penance to win Shiva as her husband against her father's wishes, making it an ideal for devoted, determined love in Hindu tradition.
History & story
The name "Hartalika" combines "harat" (abduction) and "alika" (female friend), referencing the story of Parvati's friends helping her escape to the forest to perform tapasya, away from her father Himavan's plan to marry her to Vishnu instead of Shiva.
