Significance
Onam celebrates the mythical golden age of King Mahabali's just and prosperous rule, and welcomes his annual return to visit his people.
History & story
According to legend, Mahabali's generosity and popularity troubled the gods, so Vishnu — in his Vamana avatar — took Mahabali's kingdom in three steps but granted him an annual visit to earth, which Keralites celebrate as Onam.
