Rohini Nakshatra: Traits, Deity, Pada and Compatibility
Rohini is the Moon's own nakshatra, the one Chandra loved above all his other wives. Here is what its cart symbol, Prajapati deity, four padas and ten-year Moon dasha actually mean in a chart.

In one paragraph

Rohini nakshatra occupies 10 degrees 00 minutes to 23 degrees 20 minutes of sidereal Taurus, is ruled by the Moon, presided over by Brahma as Prajapati, and symbolised by a cart or chariot. Its name means the red one — a plain description of Aldebaran, the ruddy first-magnitude star marking the eye of the celestial bull. Rohini is the only stretch of sky where the Moon rules a nakshatra inside the very sign in which the Moon is exalted, and the tradition treats that doubling as the source of everything Rohini is famous for: beauty, fertility, magnetism and material abundance. Its myth is the finest in the corpus — Chandra favoured Rohini above his other twenty-six wives, drew Daksha's curse for it, and the waxing and waning of the Moon is the consequence. If your Moon stood in this arc at birth, Rohini is your janma nakshatra, and your life opened inside a Moon mahadasha of ten years.

The four padas of Rohini with their navamsa signs

Rohini nakshatra at a glance

Attribute Value
Number in sequence 4 of 27
Span (sidereal) 10.00 to 23.20 Taurus
Rashi Entirely within Taurus (Vrishabha), lord Shukra (Venus)
Ruling graha Moon (Chandra)
Deity Brahma (Prajapati)
Symbol Cart, chariot
Gana Manushya (human)
Nadi Antya
Yoni Serpent
First mahadasha Moon, 10 years
Bright star Aldebaran, Alpha Tauri

Two things follow from that table. Rohini is dual-ruled in practice — the rashi lord is Venus, the nakshatra lord is the Moon — which is why its classical descriptions read like Venus and the Moon in agreement rather than in tension: shringara (beauty, refinement) resting on poshana (nourishment). And the whole of Rohini falls inside the Moon's own moolatrikona portion of Taurus, which most texts give as 4 to 30 degrees of the sign.

The Moon is exalted in Taurus, and the Moon rules Rohini. Rohini is therefore the one nakshatra where the Moon is simultaneously the lord of the segment and a guest of honour in the sign. Everything the tradition claims for Rohini flows from that single structural fact.

What the cart and Prajapati actually mean

The symbol is a bullock cart — shakata — loaded and moving. Not a chariot of war; a cart of produce, a harvest being carried to market. Read properly, it gives Rohini's real signature, which is not glamour but completion: Rohini takes what is latent and delivers it in usable, physical form.

The deity doubles down. Prajapati is Brahma as the maker of creatures, the one who generates rather than preserves or destroys. Under Rohini the tradition places conception, planting, building, and the beginning of anything you want to grow, and muhurta texts have long favoured it for sowing, laying foundations, house-warming and buying land. Our **panchang** and **choghadiya** pages show how such day-quality judgements are computed.

One classical omen attaches here: Rohini shakata bheda, "the splitting of Rohini's cart", when a malefic passes through the gap between Aldebaran and the neighbouring stars of the cart-shaped Hyades. Varahamihira and later omen literature read it as a portent of drought and famine — but it is mundane astrology about crops and kingdoms, never a statement about an individual's chart.

The Moon's favourite wife and Daksha's curse

Here is the story the tradition tells, and it is worth telling properly.

Daksha Prajapati gave his twenty-seven daughters — the nakshatras — in marriage to Chandra, the Moon, on the condition that he treat them equally. Chandra agreed and then did nothing of the kind. He was captivated by Rohini and stayed with her, neglecting the other twenty-six. The slighted wives complained to their father. Daksha warned Chandra twice, was ignored twice, and finally cursed him with kshaya — a wasting disease. The Moon began to shrink, night by night, and the world with him: tides failed, plants stopped growing, the soma on which the gods fed ran dry.

Chandra took refuge with Shiva, who could not revoke Daksha's curse but could halve it. The wasting would continue for a fortnight, and then reverse, and then wasting would begin again — forever. Which is exactly what the Moon does. The story is the tradition's own account of the fifteen days of krishna paksha and the fifteen of shukla paksha, the synodic cycle on which the entire Hindu calendar is built. Shiva wore the crescent in his hair as a sign of the settlement, and the shrine where this is said to have happened is Somnath, "lord of the Moon".

Notice how much real astronomy is encoded. The Moon genuinely does travel through all 27 nakshatras in a sidereal month — he cannot stay with Rohini, and the curse states that constraint poetically. Aldebaran is genuinely red, which is what rohini means. And the Moon really is at its most dignified in Taurus. The myth even names its own in-law problem: Rohini's deity is Prajapati, and Daksha is a Prajapati.

One further association: Krishna is traditionally held to have been born under Rohini nakshatra, which is why Janmashtami is reckoned by Ashtami tithi conjoined with Rohini, not by the tithi alone.

Character of someone born under Rohini

Derive the character from Moon plus Venus plus cart plus Prajapati, and it comes out consistent rather than generic.

  • Magnetic without effort. Rohini's reputation for beauty and charm is the oldest thing said about it. In practice it shows up as presence — people notice a Rohini native entering a room and rarely explain why.
  • Sensory and material. Taurus is the sign of the five senses; the Moon is the graha of what feels good. Rohini natives are excellent judges of quality in food, fabric, music, land and craftsmanship, and will not accept a cheap substitute.
  • Genuinely productive. The cart is loaded. This is a finisher's nakshatra, not a starter's — it prefers long, cumulative work with something tangible at the end.
  • Nurturing, and possessive about it. The Moon nurtures; Venus attaches. The result is people who look after their own with real devotion and are quietly territorial about family, home and reputation.
  • Emotionally steady, then immovable. Fixed sign, watery graha: slow to take offence and slow to let go of one. The stubbornness is real and the tradition says so plainly.
  • Attracted to comfort. The classical caution is indulgence — the pull towards ease and staying where things already feel good. It is the shadow of the very quality that makes Rohini fertile.

The four padas of Rohini

Every nakshatra divides into four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes. This is not an ornament: 27 nakshatras x 4 padas = 108 = 12 signs x 9 navamsas, and the pada boundaries coincide exactly with navamsa boundaries. Each pada therefore is a navamsa sign, and reading the pada is reading the **D9 chart** at its coarsest resolution.

Pada Degrees (Taurus) Navamsa sign Syllable How it colours the placement
1 10.00 to 13.20 Aries O Mars-flavoured. The most driven and impatient Rohini — beauty put behind ambition. Enterprise, competitiveness, an early hunger to acquire.
2 13.20 to 16.40 Taurus Va, Ba Vargottama — the sign repeats in the navamsa. The purest and strongest Rohini: sensual, artistic, unhurried, deeply attached to land, food and family.
3 16.40 to 20.00 Gemini Vi, Bi Mercury-flavoured. Communicative, commercial, curious. Rohini's abundance expressed as trade, media, writing and negotiation.
4 20.00 to 23.20 Cancer Vu, Bu The Moon in a Moon navamsa. The most emotional and domestic pada — maternal, protective, hospitable, and the most easily hurt.

The syllables come from namakaran, the practice of naming a child from the first sound of the pada the Moon occupied. Pada 2 is the one to watch: being vargottama, its results run more emphatic in both directions.

The ruling graha and your Moon dasha

This is Rohini's single most important practical function, and it has nothing to do with personality.

Your janma nakshatra is the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth — not the Sun. That nakshatra's ruler is the graha whose mahadasha runs first in your life. Rohini's ruler is the Moon, so every Rohini-born person begins life in a Moon mahadasha, which runs 10 years in the Vimshottari system.

You almost never get the full ten. The proportion already elapsed depends on how far the Moon had travelled through Rohini at birth. A Moon at 16 degrees 40 minutes of Taurus is exactly halfway, so five years of Moon dasha remain; a Moon at 22 degrees Taurus leaves about one year. After the Moon come Mars 7 years, Rahu 18, then Jupiter 16.

Position of Moon in Rohini Moon dasha remaining at birth
Just entering, 10.00 Taurus close to the full 10 years
13.20 Taurus, end of pada 1 about 7 years 6 months
16.40 Taurus, midpoint 5 years
20.00 Taurus, start of pada 4 about 2 years 6 months
Just leaving, 23.20 Taurus close to zero

A childhood spent under the Moon is why so many Rohini natives describe the mother as the defining figure of their early years, for better or worse. The mechanism is explained in **what is a dasha**; to see your own balance computed rather than estimated, generate a free **kundli** or check your **lagna, rashi and nakshatra**.

Rohini in Gun Milan

Most people meet the nakshatras through matchmaking, and here is why: six of the eight kutas in the 36-point Ashtakoota system are computed from the nakshatra, not the sign. Rohini contributes three attributes.

Kuta input Rohini's value What it does in matching
Gana Manushya Scores well with other Manushya and reasonably with Deva nakshatras; friction is expected with Rakshasa ones.
Nadi Antya A match whose nakshatra is also Antya triggers Nadi dosha and forfeits the largest single block of 8 points.
Yoni Serpent Best with the other serpent nakshatra, Mrigashira. The traditional enemy pairing is serpent against mongoose, which is Uttara Ashadha.

The other Antya-nadi nakshatras are Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Revati — those are where a Rohini native meets the Nadi objection. Nadi carries 8 of the 36 points, which is exactly why it produces so much anxiety. The mechanism is set out in **how kundli matching works**, and you can run an actual **Gun Milan** rather than guessing.

Compatibility, honestly

Rohini's classical reputation in matching is strong: a Manushya gana, a Moon-ruled star and a fertility deity are all favourable inputs. Mrigashira shares its yoni; Hasta and Shravana share the Moon as ruler and often feel instantly familiar; Uttara Phalguni, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada are commonly cited as comfortable partners.

But be clear about what that means. A single kuta is not a verdict, and 36 points is not a compatibility score in any measurable sense. Ashtakoota is a filter, not a prediction, and the 36-point scorecard is early-modern — roughly 16th to 17th century — even though the nakshatras it uses are far older. A low score is a prompt to look harder at both charts as wholes: the seventh house, Venus, Mars and the running dashas. It is not a reason to end an engagement.

Honest limits

Your nakshatra is one factor among dozens. It is a 13 degree 20 minute slice of sky containing the Moon; it says nothing about your ascendant, your seventh house, the yogas in your chart, or which mahadasha you are currently running. Anyone who describes your entire life from your janma nakshatra alone is performing, not analysing.

Rohini's flattering reputation is its own trap. Because the tradition praises it for beauty, charm and abundance, it is easy to read the descriptions and simply agree. Resist that. The same texts name indulgence, possessiveness and immovable stubbornness, and those are the useful parts.

The famine omen is not about you. Rohini shakata bheda belongs to mundane astrology. Seeing it sold as a personal affliction is a reliable marker of fear-selling, as are most "difficult nakshatra" and gandanta framings online. No nakshatra is bad; each describes a temperament with a characteristic strength and a characteristic cost.

And astrology is not advice. Nothing here substitutes for medical, legal, financial or psychological counsel. Kaalveda computes charts and writes reports; it does not sell remedies, stones or guarantees.
