About Govardhan Puja
Govardhan Puja falls on Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the day after Diwali, and commemorates young Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill on his little finger to shelter the people and cattle of Vraj from Indra's torrential rains — a demonstration that devotion to Krishna surpasses even ritual worship of the elements.
Significance
The story reframes devotion (bhakti) as more powerful than fear-based ritual — the people of Vraj learn to trust Krishna's protection over placating Indra, the storm god, with offerings.

The episode appears in the Bhagavata Purana as one of Krishna's defining childhood miracles, and Annakut ("mountain of food") became the ritual reenactment, with temples piling hundreds of dishes before the deity.
